Almora Tourism - Almora Travel Guide

Almora is situated at an altitude of 1,640 m above sea level and built on a horse shoe shaped ridge of a hill spread over 5 km. The eastern part of this ridge is called Talifat whereas the western side is known as Selifat. Almora is known for its panoramic view of the Himalayas, cultural inheritance, outstanding beauty, delicious cuisines and exclusive handicrafts. On the east of the Almora is Pithoragarh, on the west is the Garhwal region, on the north is Bageshwar and on the south is Nainital.

Being one of the most important business hubs of Kumaon region, Almora is visited by lots of tourists from India and abroad each year. Almora was urbanized in 1563 A.D. by Raja Balo Kalyan Chand, of the Chand dynasty. Later British maintained and developed the district. Almora attracted renowned Indian majesties such as Swami Vivekananda, Mahatma Gandhi, Ravindra Nath Tegore, Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru etc. Swami Vivekananda used this place to meditate himself.

Almora has lots of famous places which are considered to be the most important tourist places of the Kumaon region. Nanda Devi temple, Golu Devta temple, Katarmal temple, Jageshwar and Kasar Devi temple and a very historic Sun temple make Almora a favorite destination to the pilgrims. There is Govind Ballabh Pant Museum where history lovers can entertain themselves with Apen folk paintings and other treasures. Himalaya's scenic beauty along with deodar and pine trees attracts nature lovers to Almora.

At a distance of 2 km from Almora, there is Bright End Corner, which is famous for the beautiful views of sunrise and sunset and attracts a lot of people. Having lots of shopping centers, Almora also includes a very old market which is almost 200 years old and known as Lala Bazaar. Almora's fortes are copper vessels and Angora cloth which is made from Angora rabbits. To reach Almora one can use all the three modes of transportation. Nearest airport is Pantnagar and nearest railway station is Kathgodam for reaching Almora.
